Sleeping beauties
Children, the victims of development
Gone are the ‘Lullaby’ days; the use of sleeping pills among US children has soared up by 85% from 2000 to 2004. As per the National Institute of Health, more than 70 million people in the United States are paying the price for massive development by becoming victims of sleep problems, such as insomnia or sleep apnea, with some 60% suffering from chronic sleep disorders.
Worst is the plight of the children; estimates show that in 2004, more than 181,000 children in the age group of 10 to 19 fell into the traps of the deadly pill. Fifteen percent of children taking sleep medicines were also using drugs to treat attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder. As per law, it is illegal to prescribe any sleeping drug to children below 18. Yet, the number of youngsters taking sleeping pills in the age group of 10 to 19 has gone up from 554 in 2000 to 1,032 in 2004.
