After organising a palace coup in February 2005 when he threw democracy to the dustbin, King Gyanendra now looks determined to use a heavy hand and cling on to the seat of power at all costs. And the costs for Nepal would be terrible. The insurgency mounted by the Maoists in Nepal is determined to overthrow the monarchy and the ensuing mayhem is leading to a heavy loss of lives. Even the mainstream political parties are decisively against the King, organising daily protest meets against the monarchy in capital Kathmandu.
